New Hampshire Primary Video Diary 1/8/12 (by Q30TV)

Day one of reporting in New Hampshire was a busy and exciting start. In today’s video diary, Marcus explains everything we covered by midday Sunday, after Mitt Romney’s rally in Rochester. Over the course of the day, we spoke with several ralliers across the state.

We interviewed demonstrators Sunday morning outside of the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord, where a presidential debate took place. Republicans, democrats, and even Occupy protestors lined the sidewalks.

Afterward, we drove over to Rochester for a Mitt Romney rally. We awaited Romney’s entrance to the Rochester Opera House, with our camera ready to record his arrival. We followed the adrenaline rush of the other photographers to quickly film Romney as he emerged from his vehicle and walked toward the opera house. We waited about an hour outside to film that quick moment.

After Romney’s rally concluded, we made the trip to Meredith to see Ron Paul host a town hall meeting. After getting a bit lost on the road (but still enjoying the scenic New Hampshire views), we finally made it there and attempted to get as many video clips as we could of the overcrowded meeting. But an obstacle existed: the room was filled past capacity, and both entrances were completely congested with people. Rebecca attempted to weasel her way into the room with the camera, but her shorter height prevented her from filming anything but people’s backs once she entered the doorway. Thankfully, Marcus’ height proved to be more beneficial, allowing him to film above people’s heads from the hall and get several shots of Ron Paul.

Sunday was a long and eventful day, and we look forward to seeing what Monday has in store. We have continued thanks to Tim Malloy for all of his help. He organized this trip for us and serves as our producer, offering his advice on story ideas, video gathering, and beyond. He also is the one driving us all across the state to cover these stories, which you will hopefully see posted on this blog later on Monday.

Thanks for reading!

My first session today was more for my career purposes, although it could help Q30 plan some pretty awesome (and more successful) events.  I learned all about how to plan a three day music and arts festival (if you have a nearly $40,000 budget to spend and a professional event planner as your GM).  The University of Kentucky obviously has a much larger budget for their radio station and their community is huge compared to us.  They did suggest applying for grants and big business sponsors, which I never would have thought of for Q30, or any of the media groups.  They don’t ever co-sponsor events with other organizations which I thought was weird (but with the budget they have why would they need to?).  I don’t really think Q30 could ever pull off an event like UK’s Boomslang, but maybe someday our budget will allow for it.

My second session was supposed to be about social media and the First Amendment.  Nope.  It was about newspaper and the First Amendment.  I don’t like to leave sessions like this just in case they have some points I can apply to TV.  This one did’t even come close.

The last session I went to was 50 or more low-cost PR ideas.  It was geared towards radio but I think some of the ideas would be easy for Q30 to try.  There were a lot of fun ideas to get the Q30 name out to the QU community and get people to tune in to the station.  The main idea I got from this session was that being a closed circuit station really sucks.  We can’t have any involvement with the Hamden community because they can’t even watch Q30.  However, there were some unique ideas that I think we could definitely use and I am excited to bring them back to our promotions director.
